Experience
Rick Green is a retired teacher. I was in education for 43 years. I have taught K-6th, with 30 years in Kindergarten. I was also an Assistant Principal for 3 years and Assistant Chair for the Education Department at Chapmen University for a year. I served on many committees, developing assessments and even report cards for kindergarten. I contributed to refining the Colorado State Standards assessments.
Teaching Style
While teaching I believed in Hands on Teaching and developmentally appropriate instruction. My classroom was constantly changing, with it having a Native American Longhouse or changing into the Rainforest. Imaginations were encouraged. At Halloween, students would walk to my house and have school with the house being decorated for Halloween. While teaching I started writing books for my classroom, many that I cannot put into the public domain. I believe that children who are learning to read need to have books in their hands and I write the books with beginning readers always in mind.
Awards & shining teacher moments
I earned several awards in my career. In 2002 I earned the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award. In 2020, I earned the D51 Foundation Teacher of the Year award. Also, in 2020 I was a finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year. I was known as Mr. Kindergarten in District 51. I testified before the State Legislature for Full Day Kindergarten four times and had my own grassroots campaign for it called, Kindergarten Half Bake Cookie Sale.
My own education history
I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Child Development and a Masters in Education in School Administration. I also completed part of a Masters program in Special Education.
Christmas is a magical time of the year. Houses are filled with decorations and the smells of Christmas which might include cookies for Santa. Christmas is filled with anticipation for young children. There is so much that they want to know about that special man that comes on Christmas Eve. Parents struggle with getting children to sleep on Christmas Eve because they want to wait up for Santa Claus. If You Were Awake on Christmas Eve gives an insight into that special moment when Santa Claus visits your child's house and answers some questions that they might have.
